Parenting without comparisons: how to praise without harm
Why constant comparison with other children undermines confidence — and what to do instead.

«Look at how your brother does it» seems like an innocent phrase, but a child hears something different: as I am, I am not good enough.
Comparison teaches a child to measure themselves against others rather than against their own progress. Over time this turns either into anxiety or into a refusal to try at all.
Praise works when it names an action rather than a personality trait: not «you are clever», but «you kept going when it was difficult». The child then learns what exactly to repeat.
